Math

I was a math teacher in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I did that for about two years.

I went to a business and government job fair, met one of the supervisors, gave her my resume and she told me about DoD because she said, "You can travel all over the world; your agency's everywhere." So that's the reason why I applied to DoD. And I went into the Transportation Intern Program which was located in Newport News.

The Transportation Intern Program is a mixture of classes and on-the-job-training. So you're in class learning about different transportation systems, as well as going to different bases and military installations to learn about how they conduct their transportation operations.

I've always wanted to make a difference in the world which is why I chose teaching to begin with. DoD was just another extension of that because, just in a greater way, because now you're actually making a difference in -- for the country because you're actually impacting in the entire country with the different services.

I've been able switch career fields. I'm no longer in the transportation career field, but I'm able to now use my degree which was in mathematics so I'm now working operations research. So the intern program was a way for me to get my foot in the door into DoD and since then I've been able to actually move around a little bit.

One of the other benefits -- aside from just the training and learning the job -- I've also been afforded my master's degree. So I was able to go back to school and recently they've allowed me to -- they're paying for my doctorate.
