I’m Frank Von Heiland. I’m the senior language authority. I work at the Air Intelligence Agency in San Antonio, Texas. I’m the senior language authority, which basically means that I have responsibility for all the cryptologic linguists, both ground and airborne that work within the Air Intelligence Agency. We’ve come to realize that you can’t really win the peace if you can’t communicate with the people you’re trying to help. We need to be able to talk to them about medical issues, about civil issues. If you don’t understand what people are saying, in a foreign language, you’re not going to be able to help them. As America as a melting pot and the world is expanding, we need more people within government that understand some of these differences that can go then out there and help us as a nation, to speak to the rest of the world in a language that they understand.
